by Harold Ulvaeus

Snoring. A word many have joked about, but to sleep next to, or trying to sleep that is, next to someone snoring is no joking matter.

The snoring can be soft and short in duration which makes it a small problem, but when it is quite loud, lasting for large parts of the night it can be seriously disruptive. Being continually awakened through the night can have not only both emotional and mental effects by physiological effects as well.

When there is a need, there will be products. And so it is with snoring. Untold devices and contraptions are available to try to help the snorer be quiet. Some of them work somewhat, and some not at all. one of the problems is that people snore for a variety of reasons and these devices are for the most part only a band aid.

Strapping your chin to keep your mouth shut, or sleeping on a special pillow, or forcing you to sleep on your side may bring some temporary relief, but as soon as that chin strap comes off, you are snoring again.

Then there are other natural means such a doing yoga, breathing exercises, sewing a golf ball into the back of your pajama etc. and these can work to some degree, but we are still not getting to the CAUSE of the snoring.

The important thing for long term success, for nights of quiet and deep sleep is to address the CAUSE. The most common causes for snoring are all related to the tissues and muscles around your airways. A weak soft palate, a tongue lolling back into the throat, stuffy nose, tight muscles around the jaw, are some of the most common causes for you to snore.

This is great news. In the same way, (but much easier) you exercise other muscles for tone, the muscles and tissue around your airways can be toned and strengthened by spending a few minutes per day doing easy and pleasant exercises. With toned muscles in your throat and jaw and tongue, your snoring will only exist in your memory. (And in your partner’s)

If you or someone you know suffers from sleep apnea, its important for you to understand how it could affect your health. First you need to determine if your sleep apnea is a health risk to seek further treatment.

Sleep apnea is a serious condition that causes the airway to collapse. A loud snoring can be present which occurs more often in males who are overweight and other people with necks more than 17 inches in diameter.

Sleep Apnea and Sex

Sleep apnea can decrease your desire for sex and sexual arousal and cause less intense orgasms. After being treated for sleep apnea, patients have cited substantial improvements in their sex lives.

Daytime Sleepiness

Another way how sleep apnea impacts your health is that it causes you to be extremely sleep during the day - and no wonder. Sleep apnea sufferers’ sleep is constantly interrupted, 20 to 30 times every night. During an eight-hour sleep session, someone who suffers from sleep apnea may never sleep for more than ten minutes at a time.

Sleep Apnea and Collisions

In a Canadian study of 800 Sleep apnea patients, it was found that they were almost five times more to be in a serious car accident than drivers who didnt suffer from Sleep apnea. Even mild suffers had the same risk. Seeking treatment right away is a must when suffering from Sleep apnea if you are at this risk.

Sleep Apnea And Increased Risk Of Diabetes

Another way sleep apnea impacts your health is how it increases your risk of diabetes. Every time your airway collapses while you sleep, you stop breathing and your body suffers from low levels of oxygen in the blood.

Your bloodstream is hit with a surge of hormones as your brain tries to wake you. You awake and return to sleep and repeat this cycle until its time to start your day.

The surge of chemicals and hormones that have been added in your bloodstream create stress hormones. Scientists believe these hormones can affect your bodys cells that make insulin. Insulin is a hormone related to diabetes.

Do you like to multitask? Do you find that sleep is a waste of time since there are so many things that can be done while you’re asleep? Well, what if someone came up to you and told you that you can multitask even in your sleep, and by the time you wake up you would have become a better person because of it? Unbelievable? Believe it. This article will tell you how you can improve yourself while sleeping, through the use of subliminal messaging.

First of all, let’s define subliminal messaging for those who are not in the know. Subliminal messaging is defined as the use of messages that are displayed for a period of time that is so short that the conscious mind is unaware of them, yet these messages are deciphered by and ingrained into one’s subconscious. They are transmitted just below the threshold of our consciousness, and since we can’t consciously decipher them, we trend to reject the idea as absurdity because they defy the conventional ideas that we are used to.

Because such messages cannot be deciphered consciously, people have trouble accepting the fact that subliminal messaging can be effective. However, these are the same people who may have been influenced by something they’ve watched on television, most likely a commercial or advertisement for a lifestyle product or consumer goods. You would be surprised to know that some advertisers employ the use of subliminal messaging to hook consumers. Yet these messages are so subtle that everyone tends to overlook them. Also, considering the fact that the subliminal self-help industry is a $50-million-and-growing industry, it would seem as though there are quite the number of people who believe that subliminals can work.

Now, how can you improve yourself using subliminal messaging while you sleep? Simple. One of the technologies involved in subliminal messaging is the use of binaural beats. These are recording of rhythms that are each on different levels, and when listened to, binaural beats will train your brainwaves to maximize your potential. Each binaural beat has a different effect on the brainwaves, so you can use them in a variety of ways, such as weight loss, increasing energy levels, boosting confidence, etc.

Subliminal messaging works best when you’re asleep, because that is the one time that our brains have the least distractions to deal with. As such the brain is able to absorb more information subconsciously even as our conscious minds lay asleep and dreaming.

However, to achieve such a state of mind is near impossible while we are awake. Fortunately technologies such as binaural beats allow us to tap into our subconscious while we’re asleep and make it absorb the necessary information for self-betterment. Also, because of how elementary the concept of subliminal messaging really is, practically anyone - from the average Joe to the Wall Street broker - can benefit from it.

How exactly can you take advantage of it? It’s simple. You don’t need a manual, you don’t need an instructional guide, you don’t need anyone to psychoanalyze you. All it takes is an audio player and a subliminal audio file, all in the comfort of your own bed.

The steps to a better you are really as simple as the following: play subliminal audio, sleep, and repeat. Could it get any simpler than that? Hardly. So if you’ve always wanted to improve yourself effortlessly, consider subliminal messaging. You will definitely wake up to a better you.

by Thomas Wilson

Understanding what can cause you to snore is the first step in curing your snoring problem. There are quite a few different causes, each of them treatable in different ways.

In general, snoring is a result of a lack of airflow through the airways at the back of your mouth and nose. This is in the area at the back of your mouth, where your upper throat and tongue meet the uvula and soft palate.

When these tissues make contact, they vibrate which results in the sound of snoring.

Lack of muscle tone in the throat and tongue are one reason people snore. If the muscles are too relaxed, they can cause the airway to become restricted, which causes blockage and ultimately snoring.

Alcohol is another cause of overly relaxed muscles. Because alcohol is a depressant, it can cause your muscles to relax more than normal, leading to snoring. If you’re planning to drink at night, it’s best to stop about 4 hours before you go to bed to minimize the chance of snoring.

Sleeping pills and antihistamines are other depressants that have a similar effect to alcohol.

Being overweight is another common problem. It can lead to excess fat deposits in your neck and throat area, which can put pressure on your airway and restrict your breathing.

Allergies can also be a factor in snoring. They often cause nasal congestion which makes it difficult to breathe and can result in snoring.

The best solution for allergies is to use a nasal decongestant. Because antihistamines can contribute to snoring, they’re not the best way to deal with allergies. At night, try to stick to a decongestant.

These are a few of the more common reasons for snoring problems. Whether one of these problems sounds like it might be what is causing your snoring or not, it’s best to discuss the problem with a health care professional to get their informed opinion.

by David Lewis

One of the by products created by the space program for the use of astronauts was the memory foam mattress topper. Originally designed to help with high G force at lift off, it came to be used for those with posture problems during sleep. It can be of great help to such people because it does not restrict blood flow to certain part of the body during sleeping.

Although initially expensive to manufacture, the costs have come down and the result is it is used for mattress toppers and pillows and is available in retail stores today. It is the compromise between sleeping on too soft and non supportive a surface and one that is too hard. Its heat retaining property is an added bonus.

The material inside the mattress topper is very dense and is part of where it offers its advantage, between very soft and totally hard sleeping surfaces.

Here are some users comments regarding memory foam products. Memory foams when first opened up, give off an odor which many find unpleasant and can be compared to the smell of paint. This decreases with airing. Emissions from memory foam mattresses could cause breathing irritation more than a traditional mattress. However, mildew and house dust mites do not occur as frequently so asthmatic episodes could be less frequent or severe.

Our second user also noticed the same smell and placed hers in another room for a few days until that cleared. The cost to her was 100 pounds. As a result she recommends buying the best quality mattress topper you can in order to avoid these problems.

Heat reflection from the mattress topper can be a problem and cause many to be too hot to sleep at night, as our 3rd user found out. As a result she had to return it to the shop she bough it from.

Our third user simply could hot sleep at night because she found her memory foam mattress topper became far too hot. In this case she had to return it to the shop.

The first decision regarding buying a memory foam product is whether to go with a full mattress or just a mattress topper. A full memory foam mattress is a good first choice, and only a few will provide all of the benefits of memory foam. In addition to being the healthiest mattress available, memory foam mattresses are also far more durable than traditional inner-spring mattresses, lasting up to 20 years. A quality memory foam mattress has two or three layers of foam of various density designed to work together, the layers of high density foam provide the balance between support and comfort

Most of us have lived with snoring all of our lives. Husbands snore on the recliner while 'watching the game.'

by Christian Goodman

Most of us have lived with snoring all of our lives. Husbands snore on the recliner while ‘watching the game.’

Moms tease dads about their snoring and sometimes it’s mom who snores. The point is, snoring is quite common. At some point we have all snored or known of someone who did.

What we cannot all readily discern however, are the reasons behind snoring.

As I embarked on my “The Stop Snoring Exercise Program” I began uncovering some of the lesser known culprits of snoring.

Causes of snoring

First of all, it may be hereditary. That’s right; certain physical characteristics may just be family traits we can’t avoid.

Large tonsils and adenoids can contribute to snoring.

Gender can increase your odds of snoring. Males tend to snore more. Age also contributes. The older most people get, the less toned they are. Muscle tone or rather the lack of around the throat can lead to snoring.

Reduced air flow through the nose due to an illness or having allergies can result in snoring as well as a poor night’s rest.

Contributors like that are not within our control.

Other culprits are within our realm of control. Some of those include our physical sleep disposition, certain medicines, habits such as smking etc.

Consequences of Snoring

Anyone who snores does experience negative effects as well as those who are around it.

Couples resign themselves to separates rooms when sleeping - creating distance where normally closeness would reign.

It can be detrimental to our relationships, also to our own health.

We have study after study proving the value of a good night’s sleep. But we also have sleep studies proving that snoring is waking many up throughout the night. It’s a nuisance that’s robbing us of the most rewarding ‘deep’ sleep that our bodies crave.

Do You Know How you Snore?

Detering air from flowing results in snoring. The tongue placement may be culprit for those who snore closed mouthed.

Back snoring is very common and can be alleviated by switching sleep positions. If your mouth is open when snoring, it may be the fleshy throat area creating a disturbance.

Those who snore no matter what position their mouth or body is in may have more complicated factors involved.

For the larger majority however, a simple lifestyle change to get in better shape or some attention to finding a position for optimal air passage can make a difference in a sleepless night and a night full of rest.

I have a program designed to help you stop snoring quickly, easily, and almost effortlessly. Learn and practice a few simple exercises in just a few minutes each day and start enjoying a restful sleep without snoring!

There is a good chance you don’t think about the mattress you’re sleep on. Unless, of course, it’s uncomfortable - or you have a massive infestation of bed bugs. The mattress, that simplest of inventions, has been with us for thousands of years and while the concept is simple enough, like with any Thanksgiving turkey: it’s all in the stuffing.

The mattress came from humble origins. Evidence suggests the first mattresses were used in during the Neolithic period, when people started sleeping on raised platforms to get off the floor and away from pests and drafts. These mattresses consisted mostly of piles of leaves, grass, straws and even tree boughs covered with animal skins. Around 3600 BC, there is evidence the Persians used beds made of tightly stitched goatskins that were filled with water, making them the first water beds!

At the height of the Roman Republic, mattresses were commonly made out of cloth bags stuffed with hay and reeds, or with wool or feathers for wealthier consumers. This feather bed was one that would be recreated over and over all over the world. They are extremely warm and soft, and though they do take some maintenance, many of the people who still sleep on them consider them to be completely worth the time that it takes to keep them well maintained.

By the European Renaissance of the 1600s, mattresses consisted of a “tick,” that is, a cloth form, that would then be filled with the stuffing material. Once again, the poor made do with things like reeds, pea shucks and straw, while the wealthy had feather mattresses. The very rich at this time would have the ticks made of tightly woven cloth and then covered with something more luxurious, like an embroidered brocade, silk or velvet. It is interesting to note that at this time, the mattresses were placed on beds that were wooden frames that had a platform made of ropes woven into a grid. The ropes had to be kept tight or the mattress would sag; this is where the expression “sleep tight” comes from.

The use of springs did not emerge until sometime around the 1850s. Coupled springs in conjunction with wooden bed slats would be invented shortly thereafter. The invention of the box spring made the mattress a lot less lumpy and upholstered foam foundations became the norm, as did artificial fillers. Think a little bit about the history of mattresses and what they represent and how our ancestors sought the same comfort we now take for granted.

If you’re one of the nearly two thirds of adults who experience back problems, you fully understand the challenges of even the simplest of tasks. Walking, bending, sitting for long periods of time, and even sneezing can cause agonizing back pain. And since back problems are among the most difficult medical problems to diagnose, back pain often lingers for years, or even decades.

Perhaps the worst aspect of chronic back pain is when it interferes with our sleep. Tossing, turning, and waking up from chronic back pain is extremely frustrating, but the good news is there are some simple solutions.

Interestingly, the manner in which you sleep can cause you to toss and turn and feel non-refreshed, even after a full eight hours devoted to sleep. Most back problems and back pain are attributed to poor posture and misalignment due to improper lifting, sitting for long periods of time, and other activities. Therefore, it stands to reason you should ensure your body alignment and posture while sleeping aren’t contributing to or even causing your back pain.

How To Ensure Proper Sleep Alignment

A key factor in getting a good night’s sleep and reducing back pain is to make sure you have proper sleep alignment. This means sleeping in such a way that there’s no added pressure on your back or neck. It doesn’t matter in which position you like to sleep - what is most important is aligning properly to take pressure off your back.

There are three easy, inexpensive solutions to proper sleep alignment. Adding a memory foam pad to your mattress will ensure your entire body is supported, unlike most mattresses. Another solution is a lumbar/spine pad, which are designed to provide continuous lower back support and remove additional pressure on your back. Also you should consider a countoured pillow. These pillows ensure your head and neck are supported and in proper alignment.

Even with the seeming epidemic of back problems and back pain, the good news is there are simple, economic solutions readily available. Chances are, your back pain is being caused by a very simple alignment problem resulting from your sleeping posture. You can greatly reduce back pain and help heal back problems with proper sleep alignment, and eliminate back pain and back problems from once again robbing you of a good night’s sleep.

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, is often hard to recognize and diagnose, because the symptoms are seen in various other psychological disorders too. But, a primary symptom obvious in bipolar disorder patients is mood and energy fluctuation, which results in disruptive sleeping patterns, lack of concentration and interest loss in activities at various times.

The diagnosic subtypes of bipolar disorder are static descriptions of a disease in constant change, and individuals may stay in one subtype or change between the varying degress of bipolar over the course of their illness.

As clinically diagnosed, there are currently four types of bipolar illness. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV-TR, the method used to diagnose the disorder and other mental diseases, details four categories of bipolar disorder. These categories are Bipolar I, Bipolar II, Cyclothymia, and Bipolar Disorder Not Otherwise Specified.

For a diagnosis of Bipolar I disorder, there must be a manic or mixed episode, but a depressive episdoe is not required for diagnosis. Though it is not required, a depressive episode frequently occurs.

Meanwhile, Bipolar II, which occurs more frequently is usually characterized by at least one episode of hypomania and at least one depression episode.

Cyclothymic Disorder disagnosis needs a lot more symptomatic behavior conditions, such as several hypomaniac incidents, and depression episodes which cannot be fully categorized under Depression (the mental condition). In Cyclothymics, the mental condition is a low-grade cycle, which seems like mood swings to a casual observer, but is in fact an underlying version of the bipolar disorder, which disrupts normal routing for the patient.

Bipolar Disorder Not Otherwise Specified is the last type, wherein the characteristics include mood swings with highs and lows, but the patient does not fulfill other diagnostic criteria for any other subtypes.

Most bipolar patients will be depressed when they first seek help, and it is easy for these patients to be misdiagnosed as having just clinical depression. It is important for practicioners to investigate with the patient, and his or her family and friends to determine if a manic or hypomanic episode has ever occurred.

An ongoing spell of insomnia could lead you to try almost anything to help you get some much needed rest. But don’t resort to just any solution; be sure you know what your options are and how they work.

Most people who experience a few nights in a row of insomnia will head straight to the pharmacy to get an over the counter remedy. You might get some relief from a sleep aid at first, but they won’t give you long term results because they don’t fix the problem.

A sleep aid should not be utilized as a fix for insomnia. It could assist you at first, yet you need to ascertain the reason why you’re experiencing sleep problems. For your long term health, you don’t want to have to rely on medication to help you sleep at night.

Lots of people get hooked on medications and aren’t able to fall asleep if they give them up. Other people experience unpleasant side effects, or they end up with complications because of the way it interacts with their prescriptions.

Antihistamines, a familiar remedy for allergies, is a common ingredient in over the counter sleeping aids. They make you sleepy and help to make sure you remain asleep. Some people experience drowsiness the next day, which might interrupt your natural sleep cycle. Side effects could include constipation, dizziness, memory loss, blurred vision, and dry mouth. If you become dependent on them, you will require increasingly larger doses to get the benefits.

You might get a prescription for a more potent medication, perhaps a non-benzodiazephine. This will rev up the normal chemical processes in your brain and encourage drowsiness. If you need a sleep aid for long-term treatment of insomnia, it’s safer than taking nonprescription, short term cures, however they can also cause dependency.

It’s unusual nowadays, but your physician might give you a prescription tranquilizer if your lack of sleep is severe. This slows down your nervous system and causes sleepiness. It’s a short-term answer that might leave you feeling foggy the next day.

You might be prescribed antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications that act as sedatives if your doctor believes it’s the best alternative for you. These are a common alternative that don’t have the same risk of addiction as some other medications.

If you want to avoid the medical choices and select something more natural, you could look at an herbal remedy for your insomnia. There are herbs that have been shown to encourage a good night’s sleep, such as chamomile, which is often served up as tea.

Melatonin, valerian root and SAMe are also considered to be effective herbal insomnia treatments. Be sure you take the correct dosage, since too much of a good thing can sometimes lead to uninvited side effects.
