Do most of you know exactly how we spend around a third of our lifetime, which on average equals between 20 and 25 years?  Well, it is none other than sleeping. However this is not all - your waking hours can also be affected as a result of poor sleep.Bad quality sleep is bad for all aspects of your life, and the root of the problem is the quality of your bed.A good bed is one that make you feel great.A mattress that is too soft is bad for your spine and it will not support it properly.A hard mattress makes one feel very uncomfortable.  If you suffer from a bad back, go for the harder one rather than the softer option as the harder type provides better support for your back.

Do note of some of the general rules here.Woolen type of mattresses need high maintenance as they need to be turned once a week.  If you prefer foam mattresses, choose a good quality one, in natural latex if possible and at least 20cm (8 inches) thick. If you decide to pick a mattress with springs, then be sure to check and see how many springs there are.The more spring there is the more effective the support is.There are over 200 to 2000 brands to choose from.

You should try to choose a base with interconnecting slats. This design is the best option as it is the most comfortable and efficient.  It adapts to the shape of your body and your movement during sleep easily.Do not sleep with your head too elevated too.Your cervical vertebrate might be damaged as a result.Ergonomic pillows can be bought easily at an affordable price and they support your spine very well.

So, go choose a comfortable bed for yourself.  No more sleepless nights

Coping With And Dealing With Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Introduction To The Sleep Lab - Sleep Apnea Diagnosis

If your loud snoring is disturbing either you or your partner, then it may be time to see a doctor about apnea. Sleep apnea syndrome is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when breathing frequently stops for brief periods throughout the night. Not only does this condition reduce the quality of your sleep, but it can also lead to other serious health conditions. In this article, we’ll wake you up to the symptoms of sleep apnea and the treatments available.

Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type of apnea and is due to an obstruction in the throat during sleep. The narrowing of the upper airway can be a result of several factors including inherent physical characteristics, excess weight, and alcohol consumption before sleep. Central sleep apnea is caused by a delay in the signal from the brain to breath. With both obstructive and central apnea you must wake up briefly to breathe, sometimes hundreds of times during the night. Usually there is no memory of these brief awakenings.

Because sufferers are asleep when they experience their symptoms, it’s usually the individual’s partner who spots the problem. Patients with sleep apnea syndrome often snore very loudly, wake up gasping, experience night sweats and make frequent trips to the bathroom during the night. Insomnia is also a common occurrence. Consequently, patients experience illnesses that accompany sleep deprivation like high blood pressure, depression, difficulty concentrating and reduced libido. If sleep apnea is not diagnosed and treated properly, then it can be life threatening.

A sleep test, called polysomnography is usually done in a sleep disorder center to diagnose sleep apnea. Mild cases of sleep apnea syndrome are usually treated by some behavioral changes like losing weight or sleeping on your side. There are also mouth devices that can help keep the airway open by bringing the jaw forward, elevating the soft palate or preventing the tongue from falling back into the airway and blocking breathing. Moderate to severe sleep apnea is usually treated with a CPAP mask and a CPAP machine. This machine blows air into your nose via a nose mask, keeping the airway open and unobstructed. Some people have facial deformities that may cause the sleep apnea. There are several other surgical apnea treatments like removing excess tissue to clear the airway, moving the tongue forward, and moving the upper and lower jaw forward.

Sleep apnea syndrome is a progressive condition that gets worse as you age, so it’s important to take it seriously. The symptoms of sleep apnea can be made worse by obesity and alcohol consumption, so lifestyle changes should supplement the treatments that your doctor recommends. Taking care of this sleep disorder will allow you to live a healthier - and more restful - life.

Sleep is without question necessary for the human body to work properly. The lack sleep can begin hurting daily functions and a persons thought process. For some people sleep is a time to be apprehensive about because they never actually feel totally rested. They toss and turn, have problems breathing and can even stop breathing several times a night. They snore and disturb their partners thus effecting their relationships with their significant others. Work begins to become hurt as they continually lose focus and have the capability to focus. There is some hope though. There are procedures as well as devices that can at last give them a better quality of sleep and finally triumph over their sleep disorders. Click here for more information:

How to Fight Insomnia

In this article, we will review some tips on helping a person fall asleep. How long does it take for someone to fall asleep? That depends on a number of factors, including what the person ate before they went to bed, how tired the person is, and numerous other factors. If you have sleep problems, it could take hours to fall asleep.

Insomnia Information: Insomnia means you are finding it very hard to get to sleep. It also can mean that you struggle to stay asleep. Most people who battle with insomnia say that they remember tossing and turning all night long, or remember being awake at night. When I have insomnia I just can’t seem to turn my mind off; often I can’t even close my eyes. It normally takes me about a half hour to fall asleep, but my son is asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow.

The TV helps me fall asleep — I have it on a timer to shut it off after a half hour.I also need total darkness, and my bedroom needs to be ice cold – even in summer. Naturally, this doesn’t help save energy!

Some treatments for insomnia are referred to as natural or behavioral. One relaxation technique is practiced by tensing different muscle groups and then relaxing them. Another method involves repeating a set of visualizations to produce a state of relaxation. My favorite visualization is simple — lying in the sun on a beach in the Bahamas.

It is also good to be able to manage the stress in your life, as this will allow you to more easily relax at night and when it’s time to sleep. Another helpful method is to associate the bedroom with sleeping by limiting the time spent in the bedroom for non-sleep activities. So take your computer, office, and television out of the bedroom. Also avoiding large meals just before bed, and reducing the use of stimulants (such as caffeine) can also help reduce insomnia. One can also try soaking in a hot bath to relax, or listening to some soft music before bedtime.

Melatonin is a widely-available sleep aid. It is especially helpful for people who suffer from insomnia caused by jet lag or shift work. Melatonin occurs naturally in the body when serotonin is exposed to reduced light.

Other common over-the-counter (OTC) sleep aids such as Sominex or Nytol can also be tried by adults but, again, a person should discuss with their doctor before taking any of these sleep aids especially if you suffer from Parkinson’s disease, or are being treated for depression or other mental health problems. But it is also buying into the mindset of turning to a pill to solve a problem, which can spawn problems in other areas of a person’s life. More insomnia info at bestinsomnia blog and how to stay asleep during the night.

It is advised that if you have trouble falling asleep and have tried all the natural tips in this article, then perhaps you should see a sleep therapist. So many people have sleep difficulties, there is now a sub-specialty in medicine for such problems. Since insomnia can be a symptom of other medical problems, it is best to get a consultation with your doctor and discuss your sleeping problems with him.

Even with all these tips on falling asleep, each person must discover their own best way to fall asleep.

Bipolar Medication

by Gary Pearson

It is true that there is no known total solution for bipolar disorder; nevertheless you can manage the ailment with the help of various bipolar medications. How well you manage the illness in the long period of time is the main importance of the treatment of bipolar disorder.

You also have a number of psychological methods other than the medicines to treat the condition. The two important techniques are behavior modification and counseling.

It is essential for many people suffering from bipolar disorder to take a mixture of bipolar medications. It is very difficult to say if unconventional treatments by themselves help to treat the disease in long period of time.

Bipolar medications called mood stabilizers are used primarily to prevent or lessen manic or depressive episodes. Medications that are commonly prescribed for this purpose include lithium, anticonvulsants like valproic acid, carbamazepine, and lamotrigine.

Antipsychotic which is also a medicine for bipolar patients are used for treating mania. There are some other bipolar medicines like olanzapine, Quetiapine, and risperidone. In most cases it is easier to treat, as well as put off incidence of maniac feelings with the help of mood stabilizing drugs. Fluoxetine, lamotrigine, and quetiapine have been very effective in the treatment of bipolar depression.

It is essential to have bipolar medicines but they are not without side effects. Nausea, memory problems, diarrhea and weight increase are some of the problems which are connected to Lithium. If a person is taking a small dose he may not suffer from the side effects but the chances of side effect go up with stronger doses.

Anticonvulsant medications commonly cause sedation, weight gain, electrolyte disturbances, or other side effects. Bipolar medication that is an atypical antipsychotic can have side effects like sedation, weight gain, hyperglycemia, and restlessness.

As a matter of fact each patient has a different effect of the same medicine. This disorder is periodic so it may be difficult to pin point as to which medicine is helping the patient. This is the reason why the sufferer as well as the physician should not expect drastic changes but should wait for around four weeks for the mood to become steady after starting the bipolar medication.

You Snore? Here’s WHY You Snore

by Harold Ulvaeus

Snoring. A word many have joked about, but to sleep next to, or trying to sleep that is, next to someone snoring is no joking matter.

The snoring can be soft and short in duration which makes it a small problem, but when it is quite loud, lasting for large parts of the night it can be seriously disruptive. Being continually awakened through the night can have not only both emotional and mental effects by physiological effects as well.

When there is a need, there will be products. And so it is with snoring. Untold devices and contraptions are available to try to help the snorer be quiet. Some of them work somewhat, and some not at all. one of the problems is that people snore for a variety of reasons and these devices are for the most part only a band aid.

Strapping your chin to keep your mouth shut, or sleeping on a special pillow, or forcing you to sleep on your side may bring some temporary relief, but as soon as that chin strap comes off, you are snoring again.

Then there are other natural means such a doing yoga, breathing exercises, sewing a golf ball into the back of your pajama etc. and these can work to some degree, but we are still not getting to the CAUSE of the snoring.

The important thing for long term success, for nights of quiet and deep sleep is to address the CAUSE. The most common causes for snoring are all related to the tissues and muscles around your airways. A weak soft palate, a tongue lolling back into the throat, stuffy nose, tight muscles around the jaw, are some of the most common causes for you to snore.

This is great news. In the same way, (but much easier) you exercise other muscles for tone, the muscles and tissue around your airways can be toned and strengthened by spending a few minutes per day doing easy and pleasant exercises. With toned muscles in your throat and jaw and tongue, your snoring will only exist in your memory. (And in your partner’s)

Find Out How Sleep Apnea Impacts Your Health

by Thomas Wilson

If you or someone you know suffers from sleep apnea, its important for you to understand how it could affect your health. First you need to determine if your sleep apnea is a health risk to seek further treatment.

Sleep apnea is a serious condition that causes the airway to collapse. A loud snoring can be present which occurs more often in males who are overweight and other people with necks more than 17 inches in diameter.

Sleep Apnea and Sex

Sleep apnea can decrease your desire for sex and sexual arousal and cause less intense orgasms. After being treated for sleep apnea, patients have cited substantial improvements in their sex lives.

Daytime Sleepiness

Another way how sleep apnea impacts your health is that it causes you to be extremely sleep during the day - and no wonder. Sleep apnea sufferers’ sleep is constantly interrupted, 20 to 30 times every night. During an eight-hour sleep session, someone who suffers from sleep apnea may never sleep for more than ten minutes at a time.

Sleep Apnea and Collisions

In a Canadian study of 800 Sleep apnea patients, it was found that they were almost five times more to be in a serious car accident than drivers who didnt suffer from Sleep apnea. Even mild suffers had the same risk. Seeking treatment right away is a must when suffering from Sleep apnea if you are at this risk.

Sleep Apnea And Increased Risk Of Diabetes

Another way sleep apnea impacts your health is how it increases your risk of diabetes. Every time your airway collapses while you sleep, you stop breathing and your body suffers from low levels of oxygen in the blood.

Your bloodstream is hit with a surge of hormones as your brain tries to wake you. You awake and return to sleep and repeat this cycle until its time to start your day.

The surge of chemicals and hormones that have been added in your bloodstream create stress hormones. Scientists believe these hormones can affect your bodys cells that make insulin. Insulin is a hormone related to diabetes.

Subliminal Messaging for the Better You

by Greg Frost

Do you like to multitask? Do you find that sleep is a waste of time since there are so many things that can be done while you’re asleep? Well, what if someone came up to you and told you that you can multitask even in your sleep, and by the time you wake up you would have become a better person because of it? Unbelievable? Believe it. This article will tell you how you can improve yourself while sleeping, through the use of subliminal messaging.

First of all, let’s define subliminal messaging for those who are not in the know. Subliminal messaging is defined as the use of messages that are displayed for a period of time that is so short that the conscious mind is unaware of them, yet these messages are deciphered by and ingrained into one’s subconscious. They are transmitted just below the threshold of our consciousness, and since we can’t consciously decipher them, we trend to reject the idea as absurdity because they defy the conventional ideas that we are used to.

Because such messages cannot be deciphered consciously, people have trouble accepting the fact that subliminal messaging can be effective. However, these are the same people who may have been influenced by something they’ve watched on television, most likely a commercial or advertisement for a lifestyle product or consumer goods. You would be surprised to know that some advertisers employ the use of subliminal messaging to hook consumers. Yet these messages are so subtle that everyone tends to overlook them. Also, considering the fact that the subliminal self-help industry is a $50-million-and-growing industry, it would seem as though there are quite the number of people who believe that subliminals can work.

Now, how can you improve yourself using subliminal messaging while you sleep? Simple. One of the technologies involved in subliminal messaging is the use of binaural beats. These are recording of rhythms that are each on different levels, and when listened to, binaural beats will train your brainwaves to maximize your potential. Each binaural beat has a different effect on the brainwaves, so you can use them in a variety of ways, such as weight loss, increasing energy levels, boosting confidence, etc.

Subliminal messaging works best when you’re asleep, because that is the one time that our brains have the least distractions to deal with. As such the brain is able to absorb more information subconsciously even as our conscious minds lay asleep and dreaming.

However, to achieve such a state of mind is near impossible while we are awake. Fortunately technologies such as binaural beats allow us to tap into our subconscious while we’re asleep and make it absorb the necessary information for self-betterment. Also, because of how elementary the concept of subliminal messaging really is, practically anyone - from the average Joe to the Wall Street broker - can benefit from it.

How exactly can you take advantage of it? It’s simple. You don’t need a manual, you don’t need an instructional guide, you don’t need anyone to psychoanalyze you. All it takes is an audio player and a subliminal audio file, all in the comfort of your own bed.

The steps to a better you are really as simple as the following: play subliminal audio, sleep, and repeat. Could it get any simpler than that? Hardly. So if you’ve always wanted to improve yourself effortlessly, consider subliminal messaging. You will definitely wake up to a better you.

Sleep Apnea Represents Both An Extremely Commonly Seen and Potentially Dangerous Sleep Disorder

Sleep apnea is perhaps the commonest of all sleep disorders and affects almost eighteen million people in the US. A sleep disorder which is characterized by broken breathing while sleeping, sleep apnea is also undoubtedly the most dangerous of all sleeping disorders because it starves the brain of essential oxygen and occasionally proves to be fatal.

There are two quite distinct forms of sleep apnea. Central sleep apnea is in essence a neurological disorder where the breathing is interrupted because of signals sent from the brain. Obstructive sleep apnea by contrast is in effect a mechanical problem where the windpipe is obstructed either by excessive tissue or as a result of the unusual relaxation or collapse of the muscles in and around the windpipe. In both cases however the results are effectively identical with regular interruptions to normal breathing that starve the brain of oxygen and put sufferers at greater risk from things like hypertension, heart attack and stroke.

Regrettably, diagnosing sleep apnea is not always easy because snoring, which is one of its commonest symptoms and frequently results in sleep apnea being known as the snoring disease, is also present as a symptom of a variety of medical problems. Snoring is certainly often seen in cases of sleep apnea as the brain counters a lack of oxygen by awakening the sufferer enough to restart the breathing process and this generally causes snoring.

This frequent awakening through the night also results in a very poor quality of sleep and it is fairly common for sufferers to wake up in the morning feeling more tired than when they got into bed. This also produces a feeling of exhaustion during the day and an overwhelming desire to sleep.

However, tiredness arising from a poor quality of sleep is merely part of the problem and a range of other symptoms will also generally be present including headaches in the morning, a lack of memory and a difficulty in maintaining concentration.

Left untreated the increasing tiredness from sleep apnea can produce severe psychological difficulties starting with simple touchiness and progressing to depression with obvious changes in both mood and behavior.

Both central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea are treatable and, providing the condition is diagnosed at an early stage, treatment can often be fairly simple. For example, mild cases of obstructive sleep apnea caused by nasal congestion can often be treated with little more than a course of decongestants. Also, a lot of cases of sleep apnea which are not too severe may be treated using a mask that is worn during sleep and that delivers air at a constant pressure to keep the airway open. Finally, in the most severe cases of sleep apnea surgery may be necessary and can be extremely effective, although it may also produce various complications and must be approached carefully.

Probably the most important thing to bear in mind when treating sleep apnea is that because it carries the potential risk of respiratory failure sufferers should not be tempted to use sleeping pills or to take other types of sleep enhancers without the approval of their doctor.

Natural sleep remedies can unquestionably provide an effective complement to medically prescribed medication and herbs that are intended to improve the quality and duration of sleep can be of assistance in the management of the excessive daytime sleepiness frequently accompanying sleep apnea. Similarly, things like chromatherapy, aromatherapy and guided relaxation and meditation will help in reducing the anxiety and insomnia which go along with sleep apnea.

Acid Reflux: Standard Medications

by Frank Robson

The doctor may describe what type of medication for your acid reflux after considering things like age, pre-existing diseases, side effects and what stage of life you’re at.

Different medications do different things. Some will reduce the acid created, some will improve muscle performance in the stomach area and some will help to clear the stomach. Most medications are available over the counter but you should still check with the doctor before you take anything.

Most people will use antacids which are most common. They contain magnesium, calcium or aluminum salts. They usually work the best in hydroxide or bicarbonate form and are used to neutralize the acid in the stomach. There are side effects from these medications such as constipation (from aluminum) and diarrhea (from magnesium). People with pre-existing diseases such as diabetes need to be careful when taking these over the counter medications containing magnesium salts. A combination of diabetic medication along with episodes of diarrhea can be life threatening.

There is also what is known as Foaming agents, often marketed under names like Gaviscon. These generate a kind of Foam in the abdominal cavity, which covers the reflux acid in the stomach, and keeps it from swishing up through the Esophageal Sphincter.

Other medications like Pepcid and Zantac are referred to as H2 blockers. They will lessen the acid production. Cimetidine, Pepcid, nizatidine and Zantac are in this group which can work on as many as 50 percent of suffers. It is always advisable to talk with your doctor to set a doseage for these medications.

Then we have what are called Proton Pump Inhibitors drugs that differ and cause long-lasting reduction of gastric acid production. They are the most potent medications available. Prilosec, Zegerid, Prevacid, Protonix, Aciphex, Nexium, are all-available by prescription. Proton pump inhibitors are more effective than H2 blockers.

Prokinetics will help to strengthen the Lower Sphincter and clear the stomach quicker. They are unpopular as they have many side effects such as depression, anxiety, fatigue, sleeplessness and co-ordination etc.

Generally your doctor will treat you with various drugs depending on your own unique situation.
